Prof. Paulo Sampaio, PhD

Paulo Sampaio is Full Professor of Quality and Organizational Excellence at the University of Minho, Portugal.

He graduated in Industrial Engineering and Management from the University of Minho in 2002 and completed his PhD in Industrial Engineering at the same university in 2008. In 2022, he obtained his Habilitation in Systems and Industrial Engineering at the University of Minho.

In 2015, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His academic activity focuses on quality, organizational excellence, systems engineering, industrial engineering, and the application of research and development to industrial and organizational contexts.

He has taught courses in the fields of quality and organizational excellence and has been involved in several major research and development projects supported by Portuguese institutions and European funding programmes, including INNOVCAR, iFACTORY, HMIExcel, and ADM.IN.

He has successfully supervised 12 PhD students and more than 200 Master’s students. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications.

Paulo Sampaio is currently President of the European Organization for Quality for the 2026–2029 term.

He has held several positions within the American Society for Quality, including membership of the Board of Directors, the Feigenbaum Medal Committee, the Global Advisory Committee, and the Membership Committee. He also served as Country Counselor for Portugal.

Over the past 25 years, he has held several technical and management positions at the University of Minho and in other profit and non-profit organizations.

In 2009, he was distinguished as Senior Member of the American Society for Quality. In 2011 and 2016, he was nominated as one of Quality Progress “New Voices of Quality”, and in 2012 he received the Feigenbaum Medal from the American Society for Quality. Since 2014, he has been an Academician of the International Academy for Quality.
