Abstract

This study examines social spaces in small Cycladic towns as an urban and architectural response to climatic conditions. The study focuses on three case studies: Chora (Folegandros island), Plaka (Milos Island) and Chorio (Kimolos island). The study adopts a qualitative comparative approach based on methodological triangulation, combining urban morphological analysis, patterns of spatial use and qualitative assessment of local microclimatic conditions. The aim of the study is to examine how urban morphology and local microclimatic conditions jointly influence the environmental performance and everyday use of social spaces in traditional Cycladic settlements. The findings suggest that differences in urban structure are associated with distinct microclimatic conditions, which in turn correspond to different temporal and spatial patterns of social activity. Semi-public micro-spaces, such as thresholds, steps and narrow passages, play a crucial role in enabling social interaction under high summer thermal stress conditions. The study demonstrates the relevance of traditional Cycladic settlements as references for contemporary climate-responsive architectural and urban design.
